Labor Day is a tribute to the contributions workers have made, but not all workers are humans, there are plenty of working dogs. Don’t hard-working dogs deserve to celebrate Labor Day as well? While our military is over in the Middle East, there are over 2,000 military dogs employed helping to sniff out drugs & bombs. Just think about all of the working dogs out there doing a job for humans and in return they receive no paycheck; they only ask for food, water, shelter, and love.
Think of all of the K9 police dogs, snow dogs that help find people buried after an avalanche, and service dogs that help visually and audibly impaired people gain their independence. Some dogs can even detect seizures in their owners before an epileptic attack occurs.
There are even service dogs for disabled people to assist them with everyday tasks like turning on lights; and let’s not forget herding dogs that help our farmers. Search & rescue dogs find missing people, and tracking dogs help find arsonists. Therapy dogs volunteer at hospitals, schools, & nursing homes; and then there are sled dogs and hunting dogs. Even non-working dogs (aka pets) have been known to have a beneficial effect on their owner’s health.
So this Labor Day, let’s not forget our working canines. Here's a toast to all of the dogs that work hard to improve the lives of humans.
